A Short Biography
Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. He was born into and abolitionist family. His parents divorced when he was a very young child and his mother placed him with his grandmother until he was thirteen years old. His grandmothers first husband fought alongside John Brown at Harpers Ferry in Pennsylvania just prior to the Civil War. Maybe this is where he was first introduced to the idea of being an abolitionist. His mother wrote poetry himself when he was in the 8th grade. He was once of the first recognized African American poets and his poetry has influenced generations of Americans. He was an outspoken advocate for human rights and cultural pride.

I, too, sing America.
I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--
I, too, am America. I connect with this poem because I am an American, and I have learned so much about slavery and stuff like that.
